BESS Code Updates

What just changed in New York around BESS safety?

The New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council unanimously voted to update the state’s building and fire codes to set stronger safety standards for battery energy storage systems, making them the strictest standards in the country.

Why are these updates important for Suffolk County?

Suffolk communities are seeing more renewable energy and storage projects proposed. These new codes mean that any battery project here must meet some of the toughest safety standards in the nation, protecting residents and first responders.

What kinds of safety improvements are included in the new rules?

The updates require independent engineering reviews, 24/7 system monitoring to detect issues early, and coordinated emergency response plans with local fire departments and fire safety experts from around the country.

Who helped shape these new safety standards?

The changes were developed by the State in collaboration with technical experts, fire safety officials, and industry groups.

How do these codes compare with national standards?

New York’s new requirements are built on national standards such as NFPA 855 and are now considered among the strongest in the country.

Why was this location chosen?

Project sites are carefully selected and considerations such as land availability, access to transmission lines, land siting, and more are all taken into account in order to ensure quick delivery of stored power to homes when it is needed most. Holtsville Energy Storage is dedicated to the needs of the town of Brookhaven and its residents. We are working closely with town leadership to ensure that Holtsville Energy Storage functions well within the town and state’s zoning laws and regulations, which we are proud to say are very progressive and have been updated recently to encourage the safe development of industrial battery energy storage.
